Howard G Rath - Class Of 1949

Howard G Rath

Howard Grant Rath, Jr (September 2, 1931 - February 19, 2017) died peacefully at dawn in his beach house after a short illness. He is pre-deceased by his wife Peyton McComb and parents Howard and Helen and is survived by his wife of 30 years, Dorothy Moser; daughter Parthenia (Mrs David McCandless), son Francis, and grandchildren Peyton, Lainie, Jessy, Anthony, and Willa.

Howard's great love of the ocean and sailing took him many places, locally in the Channel Islands aboard his boat Kapalua, and worldwide with Dorothy as his mate. Howard was a native of southern California living his whole life in San Marino and Pasadena, leaving only to study business at Berkeley where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and was a member of the Order of the Golden Bear, and to serve in the US Army in France and Germany.

Howard later graduated from Southern California Law School beginning his distinguished career that spanned over 55 years practicing tax law in Los Angeles, first with O'Melveny and Meyers, and for the last 27 years as partner with Lewis, Brisbios, and Bisgaard and Smith. He served the community as President of the Valley Hunt Club and as a member of Caltech's Athenaeum. Howard was a model of integrity, intellect, compassion, and humor.
