Margaret Jean Brooks (Lane) - Class Of 1944

Margaret Jean Brooks (Lane)

Margaret (Peggy) Lane passed away peacefully on February 4, 2013 after an extended illness.  Born in Long Beach, California, Peggy grew up in South Pasadena and moved to Santa Barbara to attend UCSB in the 1940s.  She married fellow classmate (Frank D Robinson) in 1950 and after a brief time living with him in the Santa Barbara harbor, moved to Mountain Drive, where they raised five children.  During this time she was an active Girl Scout leader and respected soprano soloist singing in local musicals, the All Saints by the Sea Choir, and Collegium Musicum.

Peggy worked for the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions and in 1968 married SBCC professor of English, Mervin Lane.  She returned to UCSB in her late 40s and obtained a degree in Botany, after which she was a teacher's assistant for field botany classes at SBCC, volunteered at the Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens, the Natural History Museum and taught through the Adult Education Program.  After the Tea Fire destroyed their home in 2008, she moved with her husband to Vista Del Monte where she resided until her death.

Peggy will always be remembered for her curiosity, beautiful voice, love of flowers, the outdoors, and the best salads this side of heaven.  She is survived by her husband, Mervin Lane; his children Katherine (Roger) Collis and Nathan Lane; her children Rob (Allison) Robinson, Maia (Stan) Kerwood, Tamar (Martyn) Cavett, Rima Robinson, Louis Robinson; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
