In febuary of 1949, Southern Calif was blessed with a most unusual snowfall. At least 4 inches of snow blanked the athletic fields of our magnificent junior high and not surprising, the morning bell went totally unnoticed. What was not missed was the morning steam freight train northbound to Pasadena that passed beteen the two athletic fields. Unfortunately the train passed by before we could arm ourselves with proper snowballs and such! The train engineer was percieved to thumb his nose at us, blew his whistle and skedaddled by. Nontheless, We had a ball, made a snowman 3 Ft. tall that lasted a week, got in numerous snowball fights and were finally all corraled into that magnificent quad where our esteemed principal Mr. Flynn noted the fun we had enjoyed BUT it was now time to get back in class and get to WORK. Of one mind, WE ALL proceded to pelt him with numerous soft snowball so He finally thru up his hands, said "forget it" and retreated into the library. We Won the day!!!  Adjurning to the athletic fields, We soon heard the steam train returning southbound, and again off one mind WE armed ourselves with various and asundry snowballs and missiles. We did not reckon the locomotive engineer being savvy to young minds, so just prior to him getting in snowball range, HE opens the steamcocks, and effectively envelopes the locomotive in a enormous cloud of steam and proceeds past us unscathed. Being a railroad nut at the time, I put down my snowballs and gave him my very best salute.
