The "Fiesta de Las Flores"

Held at the vacant field at the s/e corner of Grevalia and Fair Oaks, it was a yearly event ending in the late 40's..I particularly remember the 1948 Tucker being on display that year..The cub pack 342 ran a booth awarding a goldfish if one could land a dime in a jar filled with water and a fish-

There were lots of booths, displays and most fun of all there was the 'catepillar'ride. After starting up,a cover would enclose the riders, and if one was lucky enough to be sitting with a kissible girl,no on but the two of you would know what happened..Great 6th grade fun..

Speaking of 6th grade, 1948 was one of the last years where children could attend Las Flores School..There was a sizeable earthquake around 1949 and the school board felt that brick building wasn't safe,so they all had to walk either to Marengo if you lived east of Fair Oaks or Lincoln or El Centro if west...That was a beautiful building and it stood strong for many more years till that dreaded wrecking ball felled it .. In its stead were built those cookie cutter condos...

I lived right across the street [and the tracks] and attended LF school through first grade [1950] when we did move to Marengo. We played baeball at LF playground until we were too big and the "homers" we hit were far too easy even for us.

Hi John,

I found the 1948 Tucker display especially interesting as I was into cars big time about then. I believe they also used that empty lot to build our entry for the Rose Parade each year.

I went to Oneonta grammer school until my folks moved up into the Monterey Hills in 1938. Lincoln Park school, junior high, and high school followed. South Pas was the "Mayberry" of the West, wasn't it? They subdivided the hills in 1961 and it is now an upscale neighborhood.

Our two sons are flourishing on their own and my wife and I have lived for many years in Dana point, Ca. Way too many people but the weather is nice. It's all about compromise, isn't it?

The image that is supposed to accompany this note is of a lapel badge from the 1949 "FIESTA de las FLORES". That's how they spelled it.

Anyway John, all the best to you and your family and stay well in Brookings.
