Carl H Ty Auer - Class Of 1951

Carl H Ty Auer

Carl "Ty" Auer  '51  died peacefully of cancer at age 71 surrounded by his family at his Hillsborough home on Saturday, March 27, 2004.

He is survived by his always supportive and loving wife of 42 years, Jean; their son Lance and daughter-in-law Jet who reside in New York City; their son Brad in San Francisco; and their son Grant, daughter-in-law Holly and granddaughter Tessa who also live in San Francisco.  He is also survived by his brother-in-law Jerry Eberhart and wife Margie of Riviera Beach, Florida; and brother-in-law Bill and wife Cat of Port Angeles, Washington.

Born and raised in the East Bay and along the Pacific Coast, Ty and his family lived in San Marino, California during his early years.  Ty graduated from South Pasadena-San Marino High School in 1951.  He was introduced as an Eagle Scout to the joy of backpacking, especially the east side of the Sierra above the timberline where his dog Leo and friends traversed with him for years.  He was graduated from Darmouth College; Stanford's Graduate School of Business and served as a Marine officer and Naval aviator.

Ty was a venture capitalist, with interests in cargo aircraft remanufacture, South American placer mining, and equipment leasing and consulting.  He served as Director of the Financial Industries Center at SRI International.  Surrounded by smart, engaged professionals, he served as president of several equipment leasing companies (Puritan Leasing, Trans Union Leasing, and Great Western Leasing), including Crocker McAlister Leasing Co., which, during his tenure, achieved the highest earnings ratios of all national bank-related lessors.

In the late 1970s their then adolescent sons left school, Jean and Ty resigned their responsibilities and for a year the family traveled around the world.

In recent years he served as a board director and officer of several not-for-profit health and human services organizations (Amnesty International, Planned Parenthood and Youth & Family Enrichment Services), completed a nine month home construction course, served on the County Grand Jury, frequently traveled abroad and read widely for pleasure.  Having briefly instructed UCLA MBA candidates years ago, Ty recently taught at the community college level.
