Hilles Meeker Bedell

President of 1964 Rose Tourney Dies

Hilles M Bedell, president of the Tournament of Roses Association in 1964 and a former member of the Board of City Directors, died January 21, 1970 at his home here. The cause of death was not immediately known, although he had undergone heart surgery two years ago.

Born in Pasadena, September 18, 1914, he headed the Home Laundry and Dry Cleaning Company here. Mr Bedell was elected tournament president in 1963 and presided over the 1964 Rose Parade at which President Eisenhower served as grand marshal.

Appointed to the Planning Commission in 1964, he was selected the next year to fill the unexpired term of Richard Jencks on the Board of City Directors, serving until 1967. 

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Worth Bedell (SPHS '36); his son, Derek Bedell (SPHS '62); two daughters, Mrs John Whipple (Joan Bedell - SPHS '58) and Mrs Chris Hubble (Helen Bedell - SPHS '64), and three grandchildren, all of Pasadena.
