Burbank, California:  Worked in office at SPHS for two years as secretary to Mr Alman, Principal; attended Pomona College for three years. Was unable to financially continue courses at Pomona because of the long-term illness of my father, so shifted to time work in the Recorder's Office, and then on to a fascinating job as secretary to the Director of Admissions, and eventually to the Graduate School, Claremont College.

In the summer of 1939, married Fred Cowles, a Lockheed engineer, and moved to Burbank in the fall of 1940. We have two sons and I went through the usual routine of PTA, Scouts, Women's Club, Coordinating Council, church activities, etc. When both boys were well into elementary school, I picked up my unfinished college course and eventually earned my BA and a General Secondary Credential at Cal State LA. I taught for 17 years in the Glendale Unified School District.
