Martha Jeffers Johnston (Flynn) - Class Of 1936

Martha Jeffers Johnston (Flynn)

Martha "Midge" Johnston Flynn (September 27, 1918 - January 5, 2008), was the only child of Dr. and Mrs. Edward Johnston of South Pasadena, California.  She attended South Pasadena High School where she played saxophone in the marching band and marched, to her delight, in a Rose Parade.  She went on to attend the University of California at Berkeley and joined the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority of which she was president her senior year.  At Berkeley she met and fell in love with her future husband, Thomas "Tom" Robert Flynn.  Upon graduation in June of 1940 she traveled east where for one year she was a national advisor to her sorority at the University of Maryland.  She then returned to the west coast and on January 1, 1942, Midge became the wife of Army Lieutenant Thomas Robert Flynn.

Prior to Tom's deployment to Europe during World War II, Midge and Tom were stationed at Camp Roberts in Paso Robles at which time their daughter Trish was born, and then to Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.  After the war they moved to Bakersfield, California where their son Mike was born.  In 1954 they moved to Fresno to make their permanent home.

In addition to being a homemaker and actively involved with her children's schools and PTA, she was an active member of her community through Los Ninos Guild and LARCs, and continued throughout her life to be an advisor to her sorority.  Midge loved to play bridge, was an avid reader and an outstanding cook.  She took pride in her garden, with particular love for her camelias and gardenias.  For a while she ventured into the business world running her own small touring business in partnership with close friends.  For over 50 years she and Tom were Cal Bears season ticket holders and rarely missed a football game.  Midge was an avid traveler whose adventures with Tom took her to much of Europe, Asia, Africa, and even the Middle East.  She had many fond memories of trips with Tom, with friends, and special trips with her family.  Midge was preceded in death by her husband Tom.  She is survived by her daughter, Patricia F. Grundeman; her son, Michael E. Flynn; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
