John Terry Maxwell, 76, a 50-year resident of San Marino, died from complications following a stroke in 1997. Terry, as he was known to his friends, was a graduate of South Pasadena-San Marino High School class of 1944. He was elected to the high school Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a sprinter, setting a record in 1943-1944 for the 220 yard dash.

Terry entered Navy V-12 program where he attended both the University of Louisiana and Duke University. After World War II he attended Stanford University where he continued his track career establishing a new record in the 220 yard dash. After graduating from Stanford in 1947 he went on to the Graduate School of Business, earning his MBA in 1949.

During the Korean conflict he served as a naval officer on the carrier USS Yorktown. He was a stockbroker for over 40 years, and a co-founder in 1975 of the firm Maxwell-Noll of Pasadena. He retired in 1995. A lifelong interest in aviation resulted in his obtaining his pilot's license in the early 60s. He owned a number of airplanes beginning with a 149 Cessna Tail Dragger, and five planes later graduating to a Beachcraft Bonanza. He was a member of the Experimental-Aircraft Association and through that organization was building a single engine aircraft in his garage.

(n 1950 he married Barbara Leh (SPHS '46)and is survived by her and their two children, Victoria Heiges, wife of Larry Heiges of Tiburon and Greg Maxwell, husband of Marion Fitzhugh of La Canada; four grandchildren; sister Joan Maxwell Danzinger (SPHS '41) of Carlsbad, California, and brother, Robert Maxwell of Hayden Lake, Idaho.
