Merle M Smith - Class Of 1944

Merle M Smith

Merle McLean Smith (September 21, 1925 - December 12, 1946), 21, University of California Extension Division student was found dead in his automobile in Tilden Regional Park, a suicide by poison, according to police. Smith, who lived in Berkeley, left two notes, one a page long telling of his suicidal intentions and another to his father, directing the disposition of his personal possessions.

His body was found on a side road in the Willow picnic area, near the Brazilian Room by a park employee, who notified police. A vial of poison was on the floor of the car. A note did not give a reason for the suicide, but investigation disclosed that the youth was losing his hearing and may have been despondent.

He is survived by his parents and a sister.
