Margie Alman Hastings
April 5, 1920 - July 11, 2025
Margie, as her friends and family knew her, was born in Redlands, California to John and Nellie Alman but moved to South Pasadena with her family in her formative years. Her father was the well-liked Principal of South Pasadena High School where she attended before matriculating to Occidental College for her freshman year. But her father had been taking her to University of Southern California football games for years and Occidental did not have the excitement she desired so she transferred to USC for her sophomore year, where she joined Kappa Alpha Theta. She graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1941.
On June 9, 1941, she married her husband of 68 years, Jim Hastings who graduated from USC the year before. For years they had tickets to USC football and only missed games when they were traveling around the world. Jim predeceased her in 2009. There were three children of the marriage, Gary (Diane), Neil (Sue), and Dean. Dean also predeceased her in 2020, a very traumatic event for her. Margie has five grandchildren as well as six great-grandchildren, all of whom survive her.
Margie was the quintessential volunteer; first at the Arcadia Assistance League and then to the San Pedro Assistance League where she ultimately became the President, ran their store on Ninth Street, and made numerous lifelong friends. On her 105th birthday, the local alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta surprised her at her residence to celebrate her birthday. Her family and friends took her to the Original Red Onion to celebrate. She was affectionately known to family as the Energizer Bunny because she was always on the move to help others and her family. Fight on.
