April 14, 1932 - March 6, 2025

James Frederick Croul, 92, passed away peacefully in Sun Valley, Idaho, surrounded by his loved ones. He lived life to the fullest leaving a legacy of adventure, warmth, and unwavering devotion to his family and friends.

Jim was born in Los Angeles to Gertrude and Rex Croul. Raised in San Marino alongside his three older brothers:  Jack '43, Richard '46, and Ed '44. They lived a life of adventure in an era when you could camp on the beach and ride a horse into a bar. Summers were spent on the shores of San Clemente and exploring California's mountains and coastline in the family camper that their father had converted from an old bus.

Jim graduated from South Pasadena High School before attending Claremont Men's College. After college, he embarked on a grand journey with friends, setting sail from California to Hawaii. However, after a few months exploring the islands, his adventure was cut short when he was called home to enlist in the US Army. He served at Fort Baker in San Francisco. A proud patriot, Jim flew the American flag year-round at the front of his home and never missed the opportunity to host a Fourth of July BBQ. His dedication to supporting veterans was evident in his involvement with Higher Ground and its mission to aid wounded service members.

Upon returning to Los Angeles, Jim began his career at Jay Barth Stock Brokerage. Eventually, he relocated to Newport Beach, where he joined the Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group, specializing in commercial real estate sales and development. His warmth and charisma not only fueled his success but more importantly, lifelong friendships. He made his home in Emerald Bay, where he raised his three children:  Scott, John, and Marilie.

In 1990, Jim met Susie, whom he so lovingly referred to as 'love of my life'. When not traveling, they divided their time between Corona del Mar, California and Sun Valley, Idaho - places that he deeply cherished for their natural beauty and close-knit communities. An avid fly fisherman, bird hunter, and, in his earlier years, a skier, Jim found his happiest moments in a duck blind or a stream, sharing laughter and stories with friends or his son John.

Some of Jim's most unforgettable adventures were spent with his brother Jack, racing his vintage cars in rallies around the globe. In 1998, Jim became the first American driver to reach the podium in Italy's prestigious Mille Miglia.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Susie; her two daughters; this three children; as well as twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers.

Jim's infectious sense of humor, boundless energy and gift for storytelling made him a friend to all. His legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren, who continue to carry forward his values of love, kindness, humor, and an unwavering enthusiasm for life. He will be dearly missed.
