Mary Deniston (Bryce)

Mary Evelyn Deniston Bryce, born November 20, 1920, in Bayfield, Wisconsin, passed away on March 25, 2010, in San Gabriel.

Mary moved with her family from from Marshfield, Wisconsin to South Pasadena in 1935.  She graduated from South Pasadena-San Marino High School in 1938 and from Pasadena Junior College in 1940.  While at PJC, Mary was a member of the Alpha Kappa Tau honorary Secretarial Society. 

In 1941, Mary married Thomas Pate Bryce, a 1937 graduate of SPSM High School.  During the war, Tom served in the US Coast Guard and Mary worked as executive secretary to the superintendent of the South Pasadena city schools.  While raising their son, Brad, Mary was actively involved in the El Centro School PTA and Cub Scouts.  Mary was a long time employee of the South Pasadena Public Library.  After retirement, she continued to support the library through the Friends of the South Pasadena Library.

Tom and Mary built their home on Bank Street in the 1950s and lived there for the duration of their married life.  Throughout their 61 year marriage, Mary and Tom were active members of the United Methodist Church.  Mary's creativity was expressed through sewing, quilting, gardening, and cooking.  She had a kind, generous spirit and her home was always open to family and friends.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Tom in 2003.  She is survived by son Bradford Bryce '68, grandchildren Dior Chase '85, Marko Chase '88, and Erin Wardlow Chase '89, and great granddaughter Audrey Chase of South Pasadena.  She is also survived by two brothers, William Deniston '37 and John Deniston '45; sister Jean Deniston Brown '40, and their families.
