Edwin R Post Jr - Class Of 1931

Edwin Rudd Post, Jr, noted California watercolorist, died at home in Santa Barbara on October 29, 2006. He was born January 28, 1913, in Spokane, Washington, to Edwin Rudd Post and Edna Stickney Post, the first of four children. He graduated from South Pasadena High School in 1931 and attended Occidental College and UCLA.

Edwin's painting career began in 1939 and spanned 65 years, during which he painted over 3,000 California landscapes and portraits. He loved to travel, and his paintings depict landscapes from over 100 communities from every region of the state of California. Over the past four years he suffered the gradual and nearly complete loss of his vision.

He was a member of the Santa Barbara Art Association, the California Watercolor Society, and was a long-time signature member of the American Watercolor Society. A book of 400 reproductions of his watercolor landscapes and portraits, published last year, is available at the Santa Barbara Public Library and other libraries in California. A collection of forty-five note cards containing reproductions from his book is available from his estate.

Prior to devoting himself full time to his art, his primary occupation was farming alfalfa in Antelope Valley, California, from 1940 to 1955.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Helen Rowe Post, and their three daughters and their husbands and children: Sarah Post Sarkissian and Geoff, their children Julia and David of Modjeska, California; Janet Van Renterghem and Cliff, their children Elizabeth and Eliana of Santa Barbara; and Alice Post Amspoker and Todd, their children Stephen, Rachel, and Meredith of Santa Barbara. He is survived by his brother, A. Alan Post (SPHS '31) and his wife Helen of Sacramento, a brother-in-law Charles M Parker of Seal Beach as well as seven nieces and nephews and their spouses and children.
