Betty Jane Wohlwend (Lane)

Betty Jane Wohlwend Lane died November 9, 2011 at the age of 93 at the Temple City Convalescent Hospital after a 10-year bout with emphysema.  Born March 26, 1918 in Boise, Idaho, Betty Jane and her parents, John and Mage Wohlwend, and siblings Jack (SPHS '30) and Lois (SPHS '38) moved to South Pasadena around 1919, starting a South Pasadena business making rubber stamps.

Betty met Willard Lane in South Pasadena and after graduation from SPHS, they were married.  Betty and Willard lived in Glendora where they raised their two boys and then moved to Lake Elsinore to retire in 1972.  In 1974 when Betty was 56, she and 32 other women started Chapter 41 of the Blue Star Mothers of America, a service organization comprised of mothers of living servicemen and servicewomen.  Betty became president of the group and she and her late husband were very active in a number of veteran's organizations.

Betty is buried along with her husband at the National Cemetery for War Veterans in Riverside.  She is survived by her sister, Lois Wohlwend Tiffany '38 of Monrovia; her sons, Steven (Zerfia) Lane of Jeddeh, Saudi Arabia, and John (Patricia) Lane of Monrovia; and one granddaughter.

I was shocked when I got my recent Tiger Tales to see Betty Jane W. Lane had passed away---We kept in touch and as kids we used to go to her home in South Pasadena---I have a plate here that she painted and sent to me years ago--I sure will miss our back and forth sending notes---Sue Van Houten Blazej
