The 1964 Copa de Oro was dedicated to Mr. Phippin

Dedication

...To Mr. Donald E. Phippin, whose untimely death in December 1963 ended a teaching career spanning 40 years.

Born in New England, Mr. Phippin spent 26 years teaching in New York and Connecticut and working for the Connecticut State Department of Education before coming to California.

Joining the South Pasadena faculty in 1949, he taught Graphic Arts, Journalism, and Social Studies.  After having advised the Tiger staff, Mr. Phippin took on the responsibility of Copa de Oro adviser in 1960.  His devotion to the teaching profession earned him the respect of both students and faculty here at South Pas.

We mourn the loss of a friend as well as of a teacher, for Mr. Phippin was a friend to all who knew him.

I remember Mr. Phippin very well.  He was a very kind person and was always wanting to help students.  When he didn't come back after Christmas vacation I felt like I had lost a very interesting, knowledgeable friend.  He is still missed and thought of often.  Linda K. (Hays) Yates

Ed Vernon (1964)

I was in his class when President Kennedy was assassinated.  I can remember his profound shock.  He dismissed us early, because there was nothing else to focus upon.
