Joan Andrews (Smith)

Joan Smith passed away quietly in her sleep at her home in Carbondale, Illinois, on September 26, 2016. She was born Joan Annette Andrews, the second child of William and Druscilla Andrews of South Pasadena on February 14, 1936.

Joan grew up in California and entered college at the University of California Berkeley where she met and married Larry Hoskins. They were blessed with three sons, Jeff, Terry, and Chris. Following her first marriage, Joan worked and supported herself and her sons for several years until her second marriage to Richard Durrett, after which she moved to Carbondale and attended Southern Illinois University. Joan met Paul Smith through mutual friends and they were married in 1986, uniting the Smith family with the Hoskins family, being very blessed with lasting and loving friendships. Joan was active as a founder and member of several groups and circles, including the Abraham Group which met at her home. An independent thinker, kind-hearted, wise, and a woman who loved and was loved by her husband and family, Joan will be missed by all who knew her.

Joan is survived by her husband, Paul; brother, Craig (Tara) Andrews, Port Angeles, Washington; sons, Jeff (Yumiko) Hoskins and Chris Hoskins, residing in Tokyo; three grandsons and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Terry Hoskins.
