Susan Jane Atwill (Cline) - Class Of 1955

Susan Jane Atwill (Cline)

Susan Jane Atwill Cline, wife, mother, sister, friend, passed away April 19, 2016, in Reno, Nevada, of complications from a stroke on February 28.

Sue was born September 17, 1937 in Pasadena to John and Nancy Atwill. She graduated from South Pasadena High School in 1955 and married John Cline in 1957. They had three children:  Nancy, Frank, and Deborah. Sue and John and the children moved often for his many assignments, first as an Episcopal priest serving churches in southern California, then as a Chaplain in the US Army. After John left the military, he and his family served churches in Crescent City, Alturas, and Joshua Tree, 29 Palms. In 1989, John and Sue retired to Calpine.

Sue wore many hats:  mother, wife, seamstress, crafter, quilter, photographer, school volunteer, Girl Scout leader, and board member, co-owner of the Crescent City Greyhound Bus Depot, attendee at the Calpine Water Board meetings, often reminding them of Parliamentary procedure, member and longtime Mission Committee secretary of St. Nicholas' Episcopal Church, Tahoe City, and member and secretary of the Cabin Fever Quilt Guild, Portola. The Quilt Guild became Sue's second family, for there she found fellowship, friendship and a means of expressing her tremendous creativity. She was also a great supporter of organizations that help and protect animals and nature.

Sue was preceded in death by parents John and Nancy Atwill, sister Mary Atwill Baker (SPHS '62), son Frank Cline, and husband John Cline. She is deeply missed by brother John (Jack) Atwill (SPHS '58) and his wife Laura Hull, daughter Deborah (Mark) Knochenhauer; two granddaughters; daughter Nancy (John) Wright; one niece, six nephews, and many, many friends.
