Martha 'Marty' Otto (Hopps) - Class Of 1955

Martha 'Marty' Otto (Hopps)

Martha Jane Otto Hopps (Dr M Otto Hopps, PsyD) passed away peacefully on December 29, 2016 at the Palomar Hospital West in San Marcos, California, after surviving a 'massive' stroke, eight days prior to her 80th birthday.

Marti was born January 5, 1937, in Pasadena and grew up in San Marino. She attended Huntington Grammar School and South Pasadena/San Marino High School. She was her high school's Homecoming Queen and rode in the 1955 Tournament of Roses Parade on South Pasadena's float, 'The Bird in the Gilded Cage'. Marti graduated from Whittier College with straight A's and honors, majoring in Sociology/Psychology with a minor in education, the goal being to become a teacher. She taught in the San Fernando Valley with assignments ranging from at-risk students to gifted 4th graders.

On January 26, 1970, she married Norman Crosby Hopps, a television producer for many years on the Dean Martin and Sanford and Son shows. They honeymooned for three months throughout Europe, traveling over 9,500 miles by car. Their honeymoon was followed by nearly 50 years of blissful marriage.

Marti authored two books, the first, Child Inside Me, poetic thoughts with photos of a woman during her pregnancy. In March 1985, at the age of 48, she had a stroke on the right side, leaving her left side paralyzed. Ten years later, through extensive rehabilitation therapy, she completed her Clinical Psychology degree and received her doctorate. Her second book, Post-Hope Stroke, documented her recovery.

Marti had many passions, ranging from writings, numerology, genealogy, a certified graphoanalyst, and designing stylish denim apparel. New challenges arrived in the form of her Very Video Company - taping weddings and special events. She soon expanded into a three camera company, learning and mastering the technical, then editing the projects to completion. As an adjunct, her spare time was spent working occasional network television shows as an extra or 'atmosphere player'.

She is survived by her husband Norm, sister Mary Otto Payne, two children from her first marriage to Asa Mason, Randolph Mason and Jennifer Hinton; two grandchildren and countless loving and appreciative friends and family members.

In her journey she has inspired many people with her energy, enthusiasm, and never-ending curiosity and extreme compassion. Her greatest charm, other than her outstanding beauty was her naivete. A quality that endeared her to all that she touched.

You are greatly missed, remarkable Lady...
