James Nielsen - Class Of 1955

James Nielsen

James Robert 'JR' Nielsen passed away peacefully January 2, 2019 at the age of 82, after a brief illness. He was born to Harry and Lillian Berg Nielsen in Highland Park, California on October 19, 1936. JR graduated from South Pasadena High School, and then received his AA from Pasadena City College. He also attended La Verne College and Los Angeles Pacific College.

As a young man, JR worked as a counselor at day camps in LA County. He was the right-hand man for the 'World's Greatest Astrologer,' Carroll Righter, who wrote for over 160 newspapers worldwide in the 60s. As a devoted man, JR became a minister in the Chirothesian Church, a metaphysical institution.

JR always loved tropical fish, and went to work for Pasadena Aquarium, a wholesale-retail pet supply business owned by Ferne Nielsen. Within a few years, they were married and moved to the Santa Ynez Valley in 1972 with the hopes of raising tropical fish for a living. Unfortunately, the inflationary economy required them to find other sources of income. JR found employment at the Santa Ynez Feed Mill, and worked there for over 30 years, retiring only two years ago. Since retiring, he again enjoyed raising tropical fish and taking care of his beloved ranch.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Ferne Nielsen, and is survived by his step-daughter Terry Honer, and step-son Ron Nielsen.
