Beverly Laurel Clubb (Roberts) - Class Of 1944

Beverly Laurel Clubb (Roberts)

Beverly Laurel Roberts was born to Edna and Jack Clubb on July 15, 1926 in Hollywood, California.  Her sister, Arlene (SPHS '52) was born eight years later. Beverly graduated from South Pasadena-San Marino High School and attended Pasadena City College.  In the spring of 1944, she met the love of her life. A girlfriend told her about a fellow by the name of Ed Roberts she thought Beverly might like to meet. Under the pretense of returning library books, Beverly and her girlfriend made their way to Vernon's Drug store in Temple City where "Eddie" stood on the street corner eating an ice cream cone. She fell for the man in the Navy uniform who was home on Leave. By August of that year, they were engaged.

Beverly and Ed were married on October 20, 1945, five days after he returned from Tokyo. They welcomed their daughter, Gayle, in 1946. When Gayle was less than a year old, the family was thrilled to move into their first home, a converted 10' x 30' tack room. Later, they lived in Santa Barbara while Ed attended UCSB. While there, Beverly gave birth to their first son, Craig, in 1950. The young family moved to Whittier where their second son, Ron, was born in 1954. Beverly and Ed subsequently made homes in La Mirada, Fullerton, Rancho Mirage, Lake Arrowhead, and finally Murrieta in 2011.

Beverly held down the fort while Ed earned his Masters and Doctorate degrees. In addition, she helped Ed with Whitiok Day Camp for several years, she was a volunteer and historian for the Ebell Club, served as president of the La Mirada Hospital Auxiliary, was a member of the La Mirada Business Women's Club, worked for three years as a dental receptionist, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

Beverly and Ed took their young family camping at every opportunity. They took many happy trips in their Holiday Rambler trailer after the kids were grown and also went on many cruises. They visited Mexico, Canada, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, American Samoa, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, and the Caribbean.

After two years of mysterious symptoms and extensive testing, Beverly was diagnosed with Inclusion Body Myositis in 2009, a rare disease that attacks the muscles. In spite of her disease, she rarely complained, continued to smile and always showed her appreciation for the wonderful care she received from Ed, her family, and her care-givers. She celebrated her 88th birthday with a small family gathering and passed away peacefully in her sleep, July 18, 2014.

We will always remember Beverly for her great cooking, gracious entertaining, love of music and dancing with her sweetheart. Beverly was a devoted wife and mother and was dearly loved by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Beverly will always be loved and missed by Ed, with whom she celebrated their 68th anniversary last October, and all told, had known and loved for 70 years.

Vaya con Dios!
