Maryellen Cramsie (Hughes) - Class Of 1947

Maryellen Cramsie (Hughes)

Maryellen Cramsie Hughes, with her children by her side, passed away on August 24, 2012 after a brief illness.  Maryellen was born to Mary and Edward Cramsie in Springfield, Massachusetts on February 5, 1930.  She is survived by three sons, Warren, Steven (Julie), and Clifford, four beautiful grandchildren; and her brother Edward Cramsie (SPHS '51).

In Maryellen's early years her father's work took the family to Boston, Hamden, Connecticut, and Riverside, Illinois, before settling in San Marino in 1943.  After graduating from South Pasadena-San Marino High School, Maryellen attended the University of Arizona, joining the Alpha Phi sorority.  Maryellen met Warren Burton Hughes in 1957 and they were married in 1959.  Burt, who passed away in 2007, and Maryellen were residents of Brentwood throughout their marriage and were members of the Bel Air Bay Club in Pacific Palisades for many years.  Maryellen and Burt were truly beach lovers, spending most of their leisure time at the Bel Air Bay Club, with frequent vacations to Hawaii.  Both were active on Bel Air club committees, and played paddle tennis together until, along with doting on their grandchildren, the game of bridge became their enjoyment in later years.  Together, they were avid USC football fans.

Maryellen will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother, a consummate volunteer and organizer, and a true friend and confidant to all who had the good fortune to know her.
