Douglas Gene Brown

Douglas Gene Brown, age 68, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away from cancer, peacefully surrounded by loved ones, on April 25, 2015 in South Pasadena. Doug was born April 6, 1947 in Salt Lake City, Utah. When he was four years old his family moved to South Pasadena where he spent most of his life. Doug received his Eagle Scout award when he was 13 and graduated from South Pasadena High School in 1965. He enjoyed his association with his fellow classmates on the South Pasadena High School Reunion Committee and was looking forward to their 50th reunion this year.

Doug served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Northern California (1966-1968) and has spent his life giving service in many volunteer positions to his church and the community. He was well-known as a kind, generous friend. Doug married Cheryl Maxham in the Los Angeles Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on August 6, 1969. Doug and Cheryl had one son, Byron.

Doug was an electrician for many years until his failing eyesight prevented him from continuing in this field. In 1991 he and Cheryl purchased Highland Park Pawnbrokers where they both worked until retirement in 2011. Doug was on the Board of Directors of the California Pawnbrokers Association, and on the board (vice-president) of the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce. He was an honorary grand marshal of the Highland Park Holiday parade in 2004. Apart from his family and church, his greatest passion was music, particularly guitars.

Doug is predeceased by his parents - Gerald and Marveen Brown; brother, Gerry '61 (SPHS '61), and sister, Marveen Brown Jessup (SPHS '76). He is survived by his wife Cheryl (the "sunshine of his life") - their son Byron (SPHS '89), brother, Les Brown (SPHS '68), and sister, Sylvia Brown Allred (SPHS '73).

I talked to Doug for the first time on the 2meter amateur radio in 2003. Later I went to his pawn shop to meet him in person. I never in my life met a loving christian man like Doug in my life. He always had a smile on his face and was happy to see you. I later help him when he retired as a helper at his home in south pasadena getting it ready for retirement. He had is issues but he always had that smile. After not talking to him in over a year I call is cell phone last week and his wife took me that he past away last month.
I can't wait to see him in the kingdom of God. He was a wonderful man and loyal servant to God. Rest in peace kg6pmh/sk de kg6oym class of 1998
