Two Youths Die in Crash on Way Home From Beach

South Pasadena High School Students Fatally Injured as Car Overturns in Ditch Near Newport

Police and California Highway patrolmen last night were investigating a fatal traffic accident which took the lives of two 17-year-old South Pasadena-San Marino High School students.

Killed near Newport in an accident while coming home from the beach Saturday night were Lee Bert Davis, 17, of 1390 Oxford Road, San Marino, and Ted Bothwell, 17, of 635 Prospect Avenue, South Pasadena.

Injured in the accident were Ralph Walbridge, 16, Brent Street, South Pasadena; Stephen B. Kent, 1119 Huntington Drive, South Pasadena, and John Truett Welsh, 16, of 631 LaMorada Avenue, San Bernardino. Young Davis was driving the car, highway patrolmen reported, when it went out of control, overturned, and landed in a drainage ditch filled with about four feet of water. The accident occurred at the intersection of Lane and San Joaquin streets in the Newport district.

Trapped beneath the overturned car, the two youths are believed to have drowned. However, an inquest will be conducted later, according to highway patrolmen. The youths were reported to have been coming from Balboa when the accident occurred.

The Walbridge and Welsh boy suffered only minor injuries while Stephen Kent was taken to Orange County Hospital suffering from serious injuries.
