Robert Thomas Sutherland - Class Of 1956

Robert Thomas Sutherland

Robert Thomas Sutherland was born December 2, 1938 in Los Angeles and passed away March 25, 2020 at the age of 81 in Mesa, Arizona.

'Suds' as he was known in school, graduated from South Pasadena High School in 1956. He was known for his excellent swimming ability and won many medals and trophies competing in swim meets and ocean swimming. He served in the Navy for four years and worked for telephone companies in Burbank and Bishop, California and Kenai, Alaska for 44 years before retiring in 2000.

Bob was a great husband and father who was very involved in his children's lives, teaching them to fish, ski (water and snow), coaching little league, and attending any sporting event they were involved in. He was always the dad that provided a 'ride' for his children and their friends where ever they needed to go. He was a kind and gentle man.

Bob leaves his wife of 57 years, Dorothy; four children, Mary (Michael), Andrea (Dave), Matt (Jolene), and Paul; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Bob was proud of his family, his work as a telephone man, and his rose garden and yard.

Sue 'Susie' Creswell (Walling) (1956)

Bob was a quiet, gentle, smiling presence in High School. His demeaner hid the fact that he was a powerful swimmer.  He really made a name for himself ! I was lucky enough to find Bob and Dorothy in Mesa, Az. when I moved here. Bob was still the same quiet, gentle, smiling presence, but this time he proudly showed me his prize roses in his backyard overlooking the golf course !!
