Family history living in South Pasadena

My family arrived in South Pasadena on Christmas Eve 1955 after having traveled across the country from Philadelphia PA in a 1950 Chevrolet Sedan. Our first dwelling was a cottage in a court of cottages in an area that was soon converted to the Girl's Gym Field. We lived in a number of rental homes on Diamond St below the library, then Fairview St opposite El Centro School, then Fairview above Magnolia, then Magnolia where we stayed throughout my school years. I left South Pasadena to join the Navy in 1965

MILITARY memories or Veteran Stories I’d like to share:

There was a Universal Draft as I graduated from High School. If you did not have a college deferment you were drafted for 2 yrs. I joined the Navy to: avoid being drafted and sent to Vietnam and, to learn a trade (Nuclear Power Plant Operator) which I thought was the thing of the future. In Navy schools with discipline and applied mathematics, I blossomed. I went on to win scholarships for college and grad school while in the Navy. This greatly improved my life and job situation so that I was able to express myself through my work and live comfortably. I am very grateful to South Pasadena High School for providing enough education, even for the lackluster student I was, to enable my very satisfying worklife and now, content retirement.

Mary Alice was my older sister. She was well behaved and a great student. As I followed her through school the teachers we shared were optimistic when they first saw my name on their class roster... She graduated and worked as a legal secretary, first in Pasadena an later in LA. She married her high school sweetheart Richard Palmer also class of 1962 who became robotics engineer.  They moved to Walnut Creek CA when Rick found a position in the Bay area. They had a son Michael.  Mary Alice was always artistic and expressed herself with pottery and painting.  Several of her lovely paintings now grace my home. She was diagnosed with cancer and died in Walnut Creek after a long struggle. She was a great sister and I miss her a lot.
